Information regarding incident at WHS earlier today

Posted Date: 9/08/23 (3:56 PM)

Dear WUSD Families:

We just wanted to check in with you regarding an incident this morning you have likely heard about. The District received information that a Windsor High School student would not be coming to school because there was a threat of a school shooting. WUSD and WHS administrators immediately involved the Windsor Police Department through our school resource officer JP Tamayo, and upon further investigation, we learned that students overheard a conversation regarding school shootings, but nothing directly related to Windsor High School.

It appears to have been a misheard conversation that followed in the wake of a lockdown drill that happened at WHS, North Bay Met Academy and Windsor Oaks Academy yesterday. Officer Tamayo’s investigation found neither a specific or credible threat, but we believe in being transparent and proactive in our communication so we reached out to staff, students and families as quickly as possible to share this information with them.

Classes at those three campuses (WHS, NBMA, and  WOA) continued as normal, though we did have an increased police presence on campus in an abundance of caution. Resources were made available for students or staff who needed support in wake of the incident. The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members is our top priority, and we take all such concerns seriously.

We continue to investigate all leads and monitor the situation closely, and we always encourage students, staff, and parents to report any suspicious activity or concerns they may have. Open communication is essential in these times and, as always, if you see something, say something. Our other school sites were informed after the fact of the incident, but it has had no impact on their operations or classes. We know incidents like these are alarming, but rest assured the safety and care of your students is always our top priority.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to the District or your school site administration.

Best,

Jeremy Decker

Superintendent

Windsor Unified School District
